You guess wrong.

It's obvious you didn't read the link you gave or you don't understand what it means for a mutual fund to buy an investment.

When you have behemoth type institutions like this with several very different business segments, you get things like this happening all the time. Not that big of deal, although you can bet we'll get at least a couple very stupid fricking statements from Congress about it.

By law a proprietary mutual fund must make its investment decisions independently of the bank's positions. This is the proverbial "Chinese Wall" between the bank and its mutual fund business.

Yeah, this thread is misleading, but didn't JPM actually bet against its own CDS a few months back, pushing the envelope on the perpetual motion banking machine?

Lighten up Francis, it was a joke.
I read the article and realize what happened.

Not really.

The fund manager was just trying to make a profit for the clients and saw a great opportunity. The fund manager had no idea the chief investment office was selling huge amounts of contracts...as they shouldn't anyway.

Anyway...I find this very interesting.

(sorry jonboy, I type slow...didn't see the other OPs comments before I posted)

My poor attempt at humor aside, the consequences of all of this will be interesting. This, and the announced shareholder lawsuit, will fuel the calls to break up the big banks.

I don't remember that. Not saying it didn't happen, just that I don't recall reading about that. Although it wouldn't surprise me.
