Is the Acer Aspire AS8950G-9839 a good computer?

I'd play D3 on it and potentially use it for school. Everything I read about it was positive. Is it worth the cost? Another thing is it looked like I MIGHT be paying for some things that aren't all that important to me. Like the 18 inch screen and speakers.
Someone in another thread said they liked the HP Envy but some people say stay away from HP.
Thoughts?

Most people will tell you to build. But if you just want one to mess around on for school and maybe a few low end games, that acer might do the trick. I don't understand why people want a lambo type computer when all they're gonna do is treat it like a chevy cobalt.
I do suggest getting one with dedicated graphics though.

I don't know if i could bring myself to spend that much on a laptop. I looked at the specs for it and it should be fine. But 1400 is a little steep.

Have any ideas that would work for me? I'll probably only play D3 and use it for everyday browsing and then school. Are gaming computers on newegg or tigerdirect easy to use for school?

my sister's acer has had nothing but problems with the screen. First one cracked due to a manufacturing defect. Second one did the same thing. Then they wouldn't replace it again.

I strongly suggest you not get a gaming laptop. Get a cheap laptop to get you through your classes, and build a budget gaming PC for $600 or so. You can upgrade the gaming PC every couple of years, play everything on high settings, and save yourself a lot of money while getting much better performance and stability than a gaming laptop.

I wish. I'm on the move ALL THE TIME. I'm only home for a few months a year and travel every week when I'm not home.

Ah. I would consider having someone from a reputable computer store build a laptop for you. A lot of gaming laptops begin to fall apart after a couple of years of heavy use, but if you find someone who knows what they're doing, they can make it last a long time.

I read about that computer. The reviews were either GREAT or HORRIBLE. Does Asus have bad customer service? Some people were complaining. And are some computers just not as good as others? Some people loved theirs and others said theirs broke within a few months.

Asus is good. I have always found the running the CPU and GPU at full blast like you do for gaming essentially just melts the notebook. It cannot get rid of all the heat. I have had at least 4 laptops from different brands all of which failed except for my macbook. I am not saying get an apple, but it was the first one that did not fail. I didnt get it for games though. I basically did what someone else mentioned. I bought a 13 inch light portable macbook for school and then went the gaming rig route. IF you are worried about portability you could build in a micro case. I am sure with all the LAN type games people play together there is some portable computers that arent laptops. I built a gaming rig into a micro atx that was basically the size of 2 cake boxes on top of each other.
