There was a book turned into a movie about the whole fiasco back in 1995. It is pretty much widely known that Leno's manager spread rumors about Leno jumping to another network to get his own show. Johnny got wind of this somehow and just decided ot go ahead and call it. Yes, he did go out on his own terms but so did Nixon by that definition.
