Got the 3 red rings twice yesterday. When it happens I just turn it back on and it works fine for a little while then will just shut off...

The solder for the heat sinks is weak and melts check out these links. You can wrap it in a towel, or use a heat gun to re-seat the solder. Sometimes this stuff works, atleast try it before buying another.

On a different issue...I have 500MB left on my hard drive. If I get a larger hard drive, is there any way to transfer all the DLC from battlefield to the new one?

There are transfer cables that allow things to be transferred from one HD to another. Worse case scenario is you have to download the DLC again, but the licenses are tied into your XBL account and not the particular 360.
