It's so rare that a television show can bring in a replacement for a star character like the Andy Griffin Show had to do to replace Gomer Pyle when Gomer left to start his own Gomer Pyle show. George Lindsey pulled it off perfectly many years ago.

my favorite goober episode was when they were trying to get him a girlfriend so he would quit tagging along. the girl they found was such in introvert and debbie downer that it ruined the evening.
