So, Avatar has been showing the past 2 nights on FX and I watched it both times. It is still an awesome movie even if it is not in 3D. almost 3 years later, does everyone still think this is the greatest movie ever made?

Casablanca. Seven Samurai. This movie does not compare to those two. There is an entire history of movies filled with better movies than this one.

I can honestly name hundreds and hundreds of films on the top of my head that are better films than Avatar.

Same.

I just thought I'd say entire history because after the first two films listed, I realized I'd be here all day.

Hell no. Story was weak. Sam Worthington is not that good of an actor. It was just really pretty to watch.

I love how its called Avatar and Jake Sully fails miserably as his role as the Avatar. For instance in "Avatar: The Last Airbender", Aang just defeats the genocidal Fire Lord, makes peace with the Fire Nation, and restores balance to the world. Jake on the other hand eradicates the humans instead of finding a way to make peace with them. The only thing I could think of at the end of Avatar is that the humans would return in like 15 years with a nuclear bomb and just nuke that tree. Way to think ahead, dumbass.

Its the most visually appealing movie of all time but its NOT the best

It's essentially a glorified remake of Dances With Wolves except on another planet

When did anyone think that is was the greatest movie ever made?

I actually like the movie. The special effects and visuals are great. It is a fun movie. It is nothing I would consider as a great all around fim. I liked the non-alien version, starring Kevin Costner better.

I honestly just find this movie highly insulting to the human spirit. We have two people representing humanity: a sociopathic, wife beating, redneck military guy and a shallow corporate guy who only gives a damn about his profits regardless of the cost of innocents. On the side of nature: perfect beings who are beautiful and are in complete balance with their beautiful nature. Nature is flawless and humanity is evil.

Compare this to say the almost flawless film Princess Mononoke. On nature's side we have the gorgeous and innocent San. However she is heavily relentless, savage, impatient, harsh, and doesn't care much for her fellow man. On humanity's side we have Eboshi. She's ambitious, controlling, a conquerer, and manipulative, but she is also kind, compassionate, and considerate to all man. Its a little more complex. And the hero of this film, Ashitaka, succeeds in his role as the Avatar between the two sides, even after heavy loss. He doesn't simply eradicate the humans, he makes it reach the point where they know they can live side by side with one another without major conflict.

This is why the film Avatar fails in my book is that it preaches that mankind must be eradicated and that we are almost incapable of change, and the ones that are capable are the select few.

No it isn't. It isn't even watchable.

Who thought that? I thought it should have won Best Picture more than Hurt Locker, but that was about it.

I thought it was incredible when I saw it in 3D I Max in the theaters, and it was. But it turns out, once you get past the amazing visuals, there isn't much else.

FTR I loved and still love Dances With Wolves.

Exactly how my brother described it. His exact words: Dude, it's Dances with Wolves with fricking smurfs.

I felt bad for him because he was very excited about this film and to see how pissed he was after seeing it, I can't describe. He isn't into movies as much as I am, and this turned him away from the industry for a long while.

He is going to see the Avengers in the theater. Maybe that will bring him back.
