I did ETA regarding this. They have been making an effort and I think it makes things more interesting. However, over time there has been a propensity to have these regional matchups.

i won't disagree with that, but they didn't do it only to the west coast, they did it to everyone. LSU has played Rice 2x, Tulane, A&M, Baylor, and Alabama for 6 of their 8 total super regionals. it makes sense not having teams travel across the country for a low revenue sport like baseball. but with it's heightened popularity, teams can afford to do this more now than before. not to mention, it allows more fans to attend games when they're driving distance away. it wasn't a super regional but i, for one, was pissed when they sent LSU out to Los Angeles in 2010 to play in arguably the toughest regional in the country that year with UCLA and Irvine. It was unfair for all three teams because all three were ranked at the time, not to mention there were regionals in fayetteville, atlanta, auburn, austin, fort worth, and gainesville

Spot on.

How long before they seed 1-16? In recent years there have been more and more discussion of it.

I could hold my nose at a Purdue national seed, but Oregon would take the cake. Whatever, I just want to see LSU/Carolina in a couple weeks.

they really should. it's only fair. right now in kendall's bracket, he has #7 Florida playing one of the last host teams NC State and #8 Stanford playing probably the last host team A&M. They should allow the #1 seed to play the last team in to host. Honestly, with the super regionals these days there seems to be no rhyme or reason how they come up with the matchups. for instance, last year you had 4 matchups of teams in the same region but then also had UNC playing Fullerton region, Vandy playing Oregon St., Texas playing Arizona St. You also had #2 seed Florida playing the #9 seed Ga Tech's region, #4 USC playing #10 Clemson's region. It's like they just drew straws of who would be paired with who in the super regionals.

i'm getting sick of NE/MW teams getting national seeds too because only 2 teams from those regions have made the CWS in the last 10 years, Notre Dame in 2002 and Nebraska in 2005. A team from those regions hasn't won the CWS since 1966, Ohio St. There might be a team that has a good record like Purdue, and it sucks for them, but those teams really just aren't good enough. They play against much weaker competition because the good players don't want to play up there and never will. The NCAA's drive for "affirmative" action is absurd. When the committee sent Florida St to UConn as the 1 seed in their region, that made me sick.

There was so much wrong with that! If you are the #1 seed and have a viable home park in the surrounding area then you deserve to host. FSU lost on making money by hosting that regional and had to spend money to travel to UCONN. And, that's not even getting at the impact it had on FSU fans.
