Jim Dombrowski - I didn't realize he was a first round pick, much less 6th pick overall. Played 10 years (1986-1996) in the NFL, all for the Saints. Started 137 of 151 games played in.

ETA: Check out that club, I mean cast in that first pic. Back when players were real players.

Mr Reliable

A consummate leader on and off the football field, Dombrowski won numerous accolades as one of the finest student-athletes in the history of the University of Virginia. The recipient of the NCAA Today’s Top Six Award for his combined athletic ability, academic achievement, leadership characteristics and campus involvement, Dombrowski was a unanimous First Team All-America pick in 1985 and was a three-time First Team All-ACC selection.

another clear cut choice. Another player that prolly would have gotten a lot more acclaim on other teams.

Keeping the uni # link on this page if others wanna jump in.

looking at that... Wayne Gandy has to be one of my top 10 least liked Saints of all time. Had a fricking recliner in the locker room and Haslett was good with that.

More Dombrowski...

After graduating from Williamsville South high school in Buffalo N.Y. I attended the University of Virginia on a football scholarship where I earned undergraduate and graduate degrees. In 1986, after my graduation I was selected by the New Orleans Saints with the 6th overall selection in the National Football League draft.

After my retirement from the NFL I entered the financial services industry. I quickly realized that to be succeful in either profession you need to have defensive as well as offensive strategies. In investing "offense" refers to market conditions where we can create wealth while "defense" refers to market conditions where wealth preservation is paramount. I utilize a disciplined relative strength methodology to help guide me when to play offense or defense.

Most people are already familiar with the concept of relative strength through their exposure to the BCS ranking of college football teams or the world golf ranking. Additionally I use this relative strength strategy to determine what areas of the market are showing strength as well as weakness. I prefer to be invested in the strong areas while avioding the weak areas.

His son played for the Mandeville Skippers. I remember when he was graduating a year or two ago and a bunch of people wanted to sign him. I don't think he was ever much of a recruit though.

Wayne Gandy

All he was ever good for was at least one penalty per game. It was like clockwork every week.

71 is another number vying for the least talent. Kurt Schumacher started a few games. Kendrick Clancy a couple of years. That's about it. Let's move up to the golden age of Saints football. Current Charles Brown still has as much potential as anyone who ever donned 71 before.

This week:
Offensive tackle Charles Brown, a second-round pick in 2010, has been back on the field this offseason after missing the final eight games last season with a hip flexor injury.
Brown started five games at right tackle in place of Zach Strief before being injured against the St. Louis Rams. It appeared he was beginning to get comfortable in the offense before playing the worst game of his career against the Rams, allowing two sacks, then having the season-ending injury.
But on Thursday, he was back, getting reps with the first-team offense at left tackle while Bushrod rested.

Some scouting reports-

Gil Brandt- Brown is a fifth-year player, who came to USC as a tight end. He moved to tackle in 2006 and started at left tackle in 2008. He is a very good athlete with good feet and is well coached at USC by offensive line coach Pat Ruel. Brown needs to add weight and strength, but he can play left tackle in the NFL and has upside.

He is tall and with the frame to get bigger. He is an above-average pass protector, and gets set quickly and maintains good balance; shows adequate lateral movement and can mirror and slide with athletic edge rushers. Brown is fast and agile out of his stand; he is mobile and has better-than-average body control, balance and change-of-direction skills. However, he is not a physical player. He does need to add bulk and strength. He also lacks explosive power and overwhelming mass, struggling to hold his ground against bull rushers when not playing with good leverage. Brown is a solid prospect who excels at pass protection. In time he could become an elite pass blocker. The knock on him is his lack of strength, which downgrades his run blocking skills. Bottom line: he is a fine tackle with upside. With added bulk and more experience, he could start in the NFL within a few years. Brown projects as a middle third, early fourth round selection. 4/1 Update: Brown still lacks the pure strength to be a great left tackle right away, but his showing at the NFL Combine was pretty good and his stock has been slowly moving up. When looking at other tackles like Anthony Davis and Bruce Campbell, Brown is looking like a more experienced and well rounded option than those two and he will get stronger in time. That could make him the fourth overall tackle taken behind Russell Okung, Trent Williams and Bryan Bulaga, and it is looking more and more likely that Brown will not escape the first round.

Before the 2010 draft many had him as a late 1st or early 2nd Rd grade. At #64 he might have been a can't-pass-on pick. Him developing into a starter would be a huge plus towards building a dynasty. Infusion of fresh (and cheaper) talent is a key to contending regularly in the confines of the salary cap.

Um, not a lot to choose from today. Kendrick Clancy is probably the best known, but he didn't do much here. Gonna go with the longest tenured #71.

Richard Cooper
Played from 1990-1995. Was an UFA out of Tennessee. Active for 77 games and started 72 of those games.

ETA: Damn blues, just beat me in. Today was a tough pick though.

I set my alarm 15min earlier

Cooper got a wow from me. That is, in that how much he played and how little I remember him. Damn, those were some dark days. Actually getting kinda used to this new golden age as perpetual contenders. After 6 years it's legitimately feeling like we're a different sorta organization than the usual out of it crowd teams.

I did the same thing. I thought I would at least remember something about him.

He left in free agency and was replaced by Clarence Jones. (???)

I'm guessing the other tackles were the headliners. We had Stan Brock and then drafted Willie Roaf during Cooper's tenure.

70 - Jammal Brown:

1st round pick (13th overall pick) in 2005 by the Saints out of Oklahoma. Played 5 years for the Saints (on IR in 2009) and was traded to the Redskins for draft picks after that season and the emergence of Bushrod. Appeared in and started 85 games for the Saints. Made the Pro Bowl in 2006 & 2008 and was a 1st Team All Pro in 2006.

dayum, some of these numbers are sparse on talent, grim reminder of how dark the Black Ages of Saints history were.

78 games, 18 starts, 1996-2001
Tom Ackerman, Center

A former starter in the National Football League and one of the greatest offensive linemen in school history, Tom Ackerman takes over as offensive line coach in the 2007 season at EWU. Formerly from Nooksack, Wash., Ackerman played eight seasons in the NFL, including the first six with the New Orleans Saints and the 2002 and 2003 seasons with the Tennessee Titans. Ackerman was the 145th pick overall in the 1996 NFL Draft and was the first offensive lineman in Washington and the Big Sky Conference to be taken. He was a third team All-American at EWU following his senior season in 1995. He played in 105 career games in the NFL, including 21 as a starter. Mainly used as a special teams player his first two seasons in the NFL, he appeared in 14 games in 1997 after playing in two games as a rookie in 1996. He started at center in 10 of the 15 games he played in 1998, and in 1999, he played in eight games as a starter and eight as a reserve. Following the 1999 season, he signed a four-year contract to remain with the Saints, then played as a backup in 15 games in 2000 and 16 in 2001 before leaving the team.

While in the NFL, he started and ran the Ack for Kids Foundation for five years, with proceeds benefiting children in his hometown and Whatcom County. Following his playing career, he returned to the Spokane area and has spent time in private business and as a football coach and strength coach. In 2007, he coached the offensive line for the Spokane Shock in arenafootball2. Ackerman is a 1991 graduate of Nooksack Valley High School where he earned All-State honors in football as a linebacker and tight end. He was an All-Whatcom County League selection in football, basketball and baseball as a four-year letterman in each sport. He started 32 games at Eastern, playing as a guard, tackle, center and long snapper. He earned third team All-America accolades and first team All-Big Sky honors as a senior, and was a second team All-BSC pick as a junior. The Eagles won 21 games in his four seasons, including the Big Sky Conference regular season title in 1992. Ackerman was born Sept. 6, 1972, in Nooksack, and will turn 35 during Eastern's bye week in the 2007 schedule. He has three daughters - Riley (9), Lexi (8) and Avery (6). His brother T.J., who was an offensive lineman at Eastern and played briefly in the Canadian Football League, is now living in Ferndale, Wash. T.J. is selling real estate along with their father Jim, who is the current mayor of Nooksack.

Cheer up blues. Looking at #60-68, there's only really one number that doesn't have a good or memorable player.

Happy Memorial Day Saints Talk! Fitting as you can see the US flag tat in the first two picks of #68, Kyle Turley.

Turley was an All American and San Diego State and was the 7th overall pick in 1998. He played with the Saints until 2003 and was a first team all pro in 2000. He played in and started 79 games for the Saints. He then went on to play one year for the Rams and two for the Chiefs.
He's probably most famous for taking the helmet of a jets player off his head during a play and throwing it into the stands. He threatened to kill Mike Martz while in St. Louis and was released. He also had injury issues and lost a bunch of weight before going to Kansas City. He has come out in full force as an advocate for players safety recently. He also plays music and founded Gridiron Records.

some may like Brian Young 04-08 but he was a too often injured disappointment to me. Conrad Dobler was prolly the most famous Saint with 66 but only played 2 years here. Look him up he was one of the nastiest ever.

I'm going golden age and looking forward with a 2 1/2 month Saint. Won't be surprised to see him in the Pro Bowl or All Pro with the rep the O-Line has had and the offensive production.

Ben Grubbs

New left guard Ben Grubbs is acclimating himself well with his teammates.

Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael said Grubbs (6-3, 310) is picking up the offense well.

"It's a little bit tough to evaluate," Carmichael said. "But he's a guy that's been in the league. He's a veteran, so he knows the game of football. The terminology is a little bit different. But as far as his mental (aspect), picking up the plays and assignments, it's been really positive."

Grubbs a first-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens in 2007, was brought in to replace All-Pro guard Carl Nicks (6-3, 343), who signed a free-agent contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"Ben is a Pro Bowler, as well," right guard Jahri Evans said. "He is picking up the offense very quickly. I think the obvious (difference) is the size, as big as Carl is. Ben is doing extremely well. He's picking up the offense. He's comparing it to his last offensive scheme he has been in. And he's doing a good job."

I love the Grubbs signing and it's my favorite signing this year besides Lofton, but I gotta give Young some credit.

He was our DT when our defense wasn't very good overall. He had three healthy years and two years where he didn't play the entire season. He still played in 64 games and started 58 of them. He had 12 sacks for us and 141 tackles. Not a great player, but one of the better players on a bad defense. It never helped that he played besides Charles Grant and 30+ year olds Willie Whitehead and Hollis Thomas.

Again, not a great player but he deserves some credit.
