He just doesn't come across as the mastermind that the joker is/was. Seems more like a big strong smart guy, not a super villain.
He's actually what the Joker constantly preaches . . .pure chaos.
The Joker's theme is that you can't control humans, but his plots in TDK were meticulously thought out. On the other hand, Bane, despite being incredibly smart, is just pure force and uncontrollable.

Alot of people swore left and right that there was no way Ledger could pull off that role
The difference with that is once they saw him in action, they changed their tune. People have already seen both Bane and Catwoman and still have mixed opinions. For the record, I wanted Crispin Glover to play the Joker but I was not disapointed in the Heath Ledger casting when it was announced.

The mixed opinions are on the characters in general, not their performances. Can we see the movie first before anyone melts down? What did you see in the trailer that would have you believe Hardy and Hathaway, two of the best actors working right now, can't pull this off?

Let's be honest here, people aren't hating on their performances in the trailers (which are good to say the least), people are hating on the characters themselves. All I heard on this message board for a year and a half is how the Riddler should be the next villain and that Black Mask or some other secondary villain from the Batman mythos should supplement him. Most people on here are sore because they didn't use villains that were well known/well liked from the comics. Whether you like it or not, Catwoman is an essential part of the Batman Universe and her appearance in this telling of the Dark Knight legend was going to happen because Nolan and Goyer understand how important she is. Bane is a much better villain than the Riddler and is a great and explosive villain to close out the trilogy. What could the Riddler have done to Batman? In fact, what has the Riddler done to Batman lately? Most Batman writers treat Riddler as a secondary villain now and make him out to be no more than a nuisance. See those stupid side quests in Arkham City and Arkham Asylum for further proof of how he is viewed today by the people who write the comics.
Bane is perfect. He has Batman's intellect and physicality and uses his powers for sinister and evil purposes. The guy is truly an unstoppable force who will kill anyone who gets in his way. When I read Bane was going to be the villain, I literally jumped for joy because Nolan didn't do the obvious by going with Riddler or Penguin, two villains who are long since past their prime. The use of Bane and Catwoman are inspired choices and I think you all will be surprised just how well it turns out.

I'm still not completely on board with Catwoman, but Bane was clearly a good choice if they wanted to distance themselves from Ledger's Joker and go in a completely different direction. I would have been super pissed if they did the Riddler. People who wanted the Riddler just wanted another Joker without it being called "The Joker". If you do the Riddler, just recast the Joker instead. Thankfully they went for a more physical force for Batman to come against this time.

Nolan said he wouldn't use Robin because it was a ridiculous idea, he must think he can do something worthwhile with Catwoman. Right?

No, I just wanted to see a villain I cared about.
