Is this legit or just fools gold ?

I recently picked him up in all of my leagues just as fliers.

I was debating in posting about him earlier today and decided to hold off to see how he faired tonight versus Mike Minor, a left hander.

He started off the year horrendously, going 1 for 24.

Since then he has gone 11 for 33 with 4 homeruns.

So I ask the board what is the expectation for Alvarez going forward ? Is he ownable in a 12 team mix league ? 10 team mix league ?

.235 25 bombs 80 rbis... if they keep feeding him at bats. He should be useful in deep leagues.

I don't see that as a problem. Isn't he a terrific third baseman defensively ? I know the guy has a hose. I don't see Casey McGehee taking his spot away from him.

Hell no

I think he would develop if Hurdle actually gave him a chance, but he acts like the Pirates are winning the Central. I think he could turn into a Mark Reynolds type - 30 home runs, 90 rbis and a .230 average.

I agree with this assessment

He's terrible against lefties and their was talk prior to the year of making him into a first baseman.

On that note, he hit a homer off Minor tonight... so that's a little encouraging. If he turn the corner and start hitting lefties at least average, he'll probably get the full load of at bats. Right now, he's still susceptible to a platoon.

Yep, low average, high power type of guy.

If you need homers, he will give you that.

Looking good. I think the homer off the lefty, Minor, yesterday had to increase his confidence even more.

Edit: Another hit off a left handed pitcher for an RBI that was absolutely scorched to right field. Credit to Beltran for hanging tough and staying in front of that ball, he's got a family to think about.

Needs to get his SB #s up to match my projections, but he's trending towards everything else.

Picked him up a couple days ago. Now whoever has Panda on their roster has to settle for Chris Johnson or Scott Rolen at 3B.
