Worst pick was the Seattle Irvin pick considering he'll only be situational. Maybe on the field for 30% of the snaps. That's ridiculous.

Irving was decent pick. I thought Tannehill was a horrible reach at first but if teams were willing to make Weeden a 1st round pick then if the Fins wanted Tannehill they did right thing to grab him at #8

irvin being a bad pick is overrated, imho

if he can get 10 sacks next year, he'll be more than worth it. dude is a ROCKET off the edge

he's in the demarcus ware/jevon kearse level of pass rushing athlete

yeah this is the era of QB madness

teams are just going to be over picking QBs every year until the style shifts away from QB domination

with the new slotted salaries, it makes it easier to keep recycling new young QBs every few years until you get lucky and hit one

I always hate agreeing with SFP, but I have to in this case. The pass rushers may be situational, but you really need them.

This.

This "fierce pass rusher" faced LSU which was the closest NFL-caliber test you can get in CFB (yet still far from it), and still he had one tackle for 3 yards, no sacks or FF's or INT's.

1 game sample and he played DE in a 3-3-5 which basically got a "lol wut" reaction from LSU

luck sucked against Oregon (hardly a D you measure somebody against)

with super questionable coverage skills

He's better in coverage than what you are giving him zero credit for. He does have ball skills and has a sick knack for the big play opportunities. He's superb in the run game.

A strong safety weaker in coverage... oh my slow, you are a fricking wizard. It's like if he was more superb in coverage, he'd be a free safety.

Mark Barron: 12 Int's in 3 years.
Roman Harper: 5 Int's in 3 years.

Mark Barron 34 pass deflections past 3 years. 16 in past 2. Dre Kirkpatrick had 19 pass deflections in 2 years and he's a superior cover guy.

Sure, one game samples never tell the whole story...

... but I think facing LSU (who have some future pro OLmen in a pro-style attack & had a QB in JLee who could've/should've been been rattled by a "fierce pass-rusher"), is a fairer test than games against oddball offenses/QB's of Cincy, USF, Marshall, Norfolk, Rutger, Louisville, Maryland, etc.

LSU had 69 offensive plays, and in the biggest test of the season, he manages just one tackle. It doesn't tell the whole story, but still it's pretty telling.

teams throw at him more.

that'll happen when you're the weak link in coverage.

i don't know how much it really tells with our oddball 1940s offense (run run run and max protect), either

So we are discounting his pass defending stats because he was "thrown at more"?

I think LSU's offense closer resembles what Irvin will face against the 49ers, Cardinals, & Fisher's Rams offenses than does Louisville or Marshall's offense. To my point, I was not impressed that he is the next Jevon Kearse or even the next Junior Gallette.

But it's all trivial opinion since no one knows the future, so I am actually hoping you are right about the Bucs selecting Mark "Touchdown, Brees!" Barron.

What he brings: The No. 1 thing that jumps out when you watch Barron's film is his instincts. He's always in position to make the play, whether he's defending the run or in coverage. He's not just a fundamentally sound player, either. He shows above-average range in coverage and he can deliver the big hit in run support.

The fact that anyone's defense of Mark Barron involves comparing him to Roman Harper is proof using the #7 pick was to high for him

I hope that Bucs' Mark Barron & Doug Martin, and the Panther's Luke Kuechly will be looked back on as the 1st Round Busts of 2012.
