Best grill around $400? Charcoal or Gas? UPDATE - got Weber Performer

The wife wants to get me a grill for our anniversary and I don't want her to spend anymore than $400. I've went and looked at a few and I have no idea which way to go. I've always been partial to charcoal grills, but I've never had a gas grill. I had my mind set on a charcoal grill with smoker when I started looking, but I recently saw a Charbroil gas grill that I liked. Do you guys have any suggestions for a decent grill in my price range and what's your opinion of charcoal vs gas?

I check amazon out before I buy anything now

Usually can find free shipping, no taxes on everything, and more times than not, you can find a better price too.
I'll use retail stores to shop for what i want then compare prices on amazon. $400 grill will automatically be almost $36 in taxes.

I swiped a 24" ID schedule 80 stainless steel pipe out of a paper mill several years ago and made a pit out of it. Got probably $40 worth of hinges, welding rods, and whatnot in it. It's badass.

Charcoal, Weber if you're not going to make one

Nice. I have a couple empty kegs laying around. I plan on turning one into a pit soon. That's on the list of projects after ice chest radio

If buying gas, do not buy anything you see at a big box store(including Char-Broil) unless it's either Weber or Huntington(or others under that umbrella).

Don't need anything fancy for charcoal... Best time to buy a grill is in the fall when they go on sale... Albertsons had grills like ur looking at for ~$150 (last fall)

BTW, I love mine. I use it for true grilling. I have an offset for smoking, and could use it as a charcoal pit in the main barrel if I had to.
I will be doing a conversion on it soon. Moving the smoke stack to the same side of fire box and building a new, insulated firebox that has tubes running all the way to the far end. Smoke will have to run back across the meat to escape. Will be hella cheaper than buying one of the commercial reverse flow smokers.

If you do steaks often enough get a searing burner. I do restaurant quality steaks in 3-5 minutes depending on thickness. I absolutely love it.
