The deal with that, as I understand it, was they had to cut corners and go with the open structure instead of a more elaborate facade, because the school had to cut a deal to get funding for Middleton Libarary out of the same funds to get the stadium expansion past the Legislature.

Basically, LSU got two architectural abominations (although I actually like the inside-the-stadium look of the SEZ) out of the same deal.
