Because Bertman was on his way out as AD
Alleva had to make a hire without really knowing the LSU landscape
I can't really fault Alleva because I don't think Trent was a bad hire at the time

Trent was probably near number 1 on his radar if Coach K left. Was at a big time academic school, winning, and had contacts with the athletic academic kids because of it (its almost like a sequestered instate type of talent pool.) He might not have been a huge personality type guy but Duke being an established powerhouse obviously didnt need that. He was a good duke hire. Not a good LSU hire and I agree you cant really fault alleva for it.
