he wants 23 million this year.

That's 46 million for the first two years.

8+8+6+6= 28, not 46.

Posted by BlacknGold yeah, its a pretty common sense rumor, so it has the best chance of being true. just means Goodell sucks and Brees wont be there Monday.

I'm going to wait til Monday before I decide what Brees will do.

I'm just guessing, but I would think he knows that they have to wait for the suspensions before they sign him. He knows a deal will get done. So maybe he shows up.

You are very confused. Brees would get 30 up front + 8 i'n sary this year and 8 i'n salary next year. That is 46 million i'n the first 2 years.

The saints cap hit would be 14 million( 8 i'n salary and 6 for the bonus ) this year. And 14 million next.

I don't know how else to explain it.

ETA: this just example. I really think his signing bonus should be around 40 million and salary around 10 the next couple years. That way the cap hit for the 3rd and 4th years won't be ridiculous

Saints cap hit is 6 million ( signing bonus )

thats not how it works... Why would you give him 30 upfront as a signing bonus and then you pay him 6 million again as part of the same signing bonus?

the signing bonus is spread out over the time period (this case 5 years), so he gets 6 million a year on top of his salary. not 30 up front. if he gets cut (wont happen), then he gets whatever is left of the bonus and we take that as a cap hit.

i dont know how else to explain it.

Signing bonus's get paid to players i'n the first year.
But the team gets several years to count it toward the cap.
Signing bonus were created as a way to circumvent the cap.

Brees would get the whole 30 million the first year. The saints would hAve 5 years to count itvtowards the cap.

Rather, call Breesus.
I'm sure he'll have some choice words for you.

We actually are.....I don't get your point. The only way we don't take the 14.4 hit is if brees doesn't play in which this discussion doesn't even matter. That's why it is on the books. He want's money upfront obviously. We will have to cut people and free up some serious money; to the tune of 6-8 million at least to get it done. Guaranteed money is still on the cap.....

you are very confused about how this works.

Ok I didn't know about the guaranteed money part. My point was yall were talking like we actually have only 400k of Cap space when we really have more. at least when it pertains to signing brees.

So my "inside" info is pretty much what we all expected. The Saints are waiting for the player suspensions so they can know where they lie with the cap.

Wow, really man? Another "rumor" with "inside" info. One that once again just happens to be based more on logical inference than insider info. Most anyone would guess that since Brees has not been signed and the suspensions affect cap that this is likely the case. Of course like every other rumor so far this offseason it will probably turn out to be BS again. This is getting old.

He's right.

Money paid up front in the form of a signing bonus is paid to the player...but spread across the life of the contract from a salary cap standpoint.

So, Brees would get the signing bonus + year 1 salary in the first year...but the salary cap implications would be signing bonus divided by the life of the deal + year 1 salary.

This contract would be a serious drain in 3 years. If you expect a comparable contract to other top qb's right now, the salary would have to hit over 20 mil in the last 3 years. Add to that the prorated bonus and thats like 25% of the cap. We would still have to cut people in your second scenario as well.

There is no way around cutting people at some point. In my second senario, the cap hit this year would be 18 mil. We would need around 3.5 extra cap this year , which could be covered by Vilma and Smiths suspensions. Next year brees cap hit would also be 18. Another cap hit of 17( 9 - salary 8 -bonus) for the third year would give brees the 69 he wants for the first 3 years.

Hopefully after that he would be willing to restructure for a longer retirement deal.

ETA: remember that Manning was due 28 million this past year with the Colts.

Actually here is a better contract if it has to be 5 years 115 mill. ( which it may not be )

1st year: 45 mil ( signing bonus ) + 10 mil salary
Cap hit = 19mil

2nd year: 8 mil salary ( a little lower cause we need to sign Grahm)
Cap hit = 17mil

3rd year : 11 mil salary
Cap hit : 20 mil

4th year : 19 mil salary
Cap hit : 28 mil

5th year : 22 mil salary
Cap hit : 31 mil

Obviously we would hope he would want to restructure for a retirement deal after the 3rd or 4th year.

ETA: only problem with this contract is that the signing bonus is a little too high. Unprecedented maybe. If Brees got hurt this next year , we would be fricked i'n a very uncomfortable way.
