I made my stance on this clear earlier in the thread, but I will address this in defense of American Pie. It's not that it necessarily 'changed' comedy, but it was pretty much the first big R rated teen comedy since Porky's. It definitely pushed the boundaries enough for Superbad to be possible (not saying Superbad couldn't have been made without AP, but they definitely paved the way).

What did Superbad do to push the boundaries? Hilarious movie but not exactly groundbreaking on a comedic level.

The 40 Year Old Virgin is the comedy that paved the way really, not American Pie. Sure it came before it, but it would be a good five years before any change became apparent.
