I really don't see how American Pie changed comedy really, aside from all the crappy unneeded sequels. I'd venture to say that the genre would be rather similar if American Pie had never been made. I don't see how it really affected Apatow's or Wright's works, the two people who made the biggest impact on comedy in the 21st century.

I made my stance on this clear earlier in the thread, but I will address this in defense of American Pie. It's not that it necessarily 'changed' comedy, but it was pretty much the first big R rated teen comedy since Porky's. It definitely pushed the boundaries enough for Superbad to be possible (not saying Superbad couldn't have been made without AP, but they definitely paved the way).
