outside of 2 guys, the lottery is basically full of upside players. While im not a huge Drummond fan either, he is really not much different than the rest of the project type players after Davis and Robinson. And maybe Beal.

just about everyone else has some big deficiency. Drummond is no different.

You don't take a "potential" waiver in the top 5.

That happens all the time in the NBA draft.
- Kyrie Irving was the #1 pick after 11 college games
- Enes Kanter was the #3 pick last year and never played a game in college
- Derrick Favors was #3 pick in 2010 with similar stats vs. potential profile to Drummond.
- Damn near every foreigner or kid drafted straight out of HS

I admit that I exaggerated there, but I still don't think he is worthy of a true lottery pick (top 3). I want a known commodity at that point. Around 5 is the highest I would want someone that showed very little in actual games. His ceiling looks way more like McGee than Howard.

drafting a bunch of safe/solid picks gets you in the lower half of the playoffs on a consistent basis and that's about it

Seriously? I kind of think you are making that up. Even if you can back that up, it's going to be a really pov type list.

Why do you want to draft a project? Especially at a position where the team doesn't have a need.

Do you think someone like MKG or Barnes are going to be a huge difference maker?

Center? You serious? Someone is probably going to offer Kaman somewhere in the neighborhood of $8m/yr and leave us with Okafor, plus Smiht backing up both the 4 and 5.
