Still hanging out in the single digits, though barely

It would be a mximum of 4 depending on the slope rating of hte courses you have been playing. Providing they are all par 72 courses.

75, 76, 76, 76, 77, 77, 79, 79, 79, 79

scores that count. average is 77.3. I'd say somewhere b/w 5 and 6.

If the average is 77.3, you multiply by .9, then add like 5 to get the index... So the index is roughly 2.5

If your August bad scores are from the USGA Mid-Am then you are below 3.9. Handicap doesn't measure your skill level it measures your potential. It takes 96% of your ten best indexes.

ETA: Using my courses slope/rating I'd say you're about a 3.3. Your low handicap is a function of the difficult courses you're playing. I'd bet your scores would remain consistent if you played easier courses and your index would rise.

It takes 96% of your differential, which is why this is insanely impossible to figure out without having been provided course slope and ratings for each score.

ETA: just saw your edit

but with the up and down of scores....I have to question if you are being true to yourself with not taking mulligans, etc.

nah, my game just fluxates like that. For instance my mid-am qualifier started out par, quadrupple bogie, bogie, eagle. I can also admit that i'm not a great competitive player.

My strengths currently are iron play, approach shots, chipping, and scrambling/punch shots/luck shots.
However good aggressive chipping has to be practiced and i haven't found much time to practice.
My weakness is putting. I'm terrible at it.
My live or die club is driver. I hit decently long, and on some days i'm in the fairway all day or some days i'm all over the place.

The handicap system does seem a little crazy. Heck I am a plus 3 right now and have not broken par in over a month. But just remember that we are all playing under the same rules so it is fair!!

Except those tournaments that go off of handicap, but allow people to just state their handicap. Lots of people without an official handicap just say whatever they usually shoot over par plus a couple of strokes.
