The primary feature about HBOGO isn't streaming, it's access to the back catalog for no additional charge. If streaming and convenience were the keys then you wouldn't have the "when is HBOGO coming to PS3 threads". People want to watch this on their TV, and if it was available for free in the On Demand section of their cable box there wouldn't be as much buzz about it being a streaming service.

It does not work b/c people are shameless criminals who don't respect the rights of content creators.
This all comes down to the issue of whether IP is actually property. If it is, then the creator has the right to make it completely unavailable if they choose to, and you have the right to be pissed about it but not the right to steal it.

I have not argued for piracy at all in this thread, although I did link to a poli board discussion on the merits of IP, but like I mentioned then: the merits of IP is a totally other discussion.
In this thread I'm trying to focus on the simple realities of the marketplace. People are going to pirate if they can't get the content they want easily and in the format they want it.
It behooves media companies to meet the demand.
I keep bringing up the music industry because I think that after their initial resistance that they've responded quite appropriately. And all I'm really saying is that if the movie industry wants to minimize piracy, then they will have to adapt similarly to how the music industry adapted.

I understood this to be the premise of the thread, and completely agree. It has gone off on a tangent, but I think it is an interesting discussion regardless.

I agree with all of this as well.
My understanding with the music industry is the new tech kind of caught them off guard and people were downloading the music for free. Metallica had a single that some radio stations started playing before it was released because someone had gotten access to it and uploaded it to Napster or something. They did maybe dicker around with details for too long that cost them. It seems like the iTunes model was a no brainer.
Here the stuff is avaiable on line and on DVD, just not for a price some people want to pay. Not having the new season available right away is no different that a movie being released in theaters first, then on DVD and streaming a few months later.

It's not about entitlement, or anything like that. It's about the want to desire content that studios aren't really cultivating.
