Here are the NFL comparisons I did last year. They're a little dated but still useful.
Man U = Cowboys - just don't pick them
Liverpool = Packers - Deep rooted, lots of past success, always in the mix
Chelsea = Patriots - most talented, wealthy and better behaved fan base
Arsenal = Chargers - good looking offense, questionable defense, full of young talent but let veterans go
Manchester City = Redskins - mix of bandwagon fans and long-time ones, ownership with deep pockets but uses it wastefully
Everton = Colts - knowledgeable fans, well managed, to US fans Tim Howard has the universal appeal of Peyton Manning
Aston Villa = Bears - Main fan base in a big industrial city, very hot and cold
Newcastle = Eagles - Probably the rowdiest fan base, usually in the mix, give criminal players second chances
Fulham = Cardinals - everyone forgets about them, but sometimes they can catch you by surprise
Stoke = Ravens - they might not score that much, but you'll be black and blue after the game
Tottenham Hotspur = Jets - little brother from biggest city, make a lot of noise but never break into the elite
Wigan = Bills - just sad (I don't know how they avoided relegation)
Sunderland = Seahawks - kind of "out there", but good fans
Wolverhampton = Texans - New kid on the block, fold under pressure
Bolton = Bucs - smaller fan base, exciting young players, surprisingly good last year but folded in the end
Man U = Cowboys - just don't pick them

Also I'd lean towards Man U being the Patriots. (well run organizations that wins a lot and I hate them)

Honestly, just watch a bunch of games and then choosing your favorite. You can choose on style, players, kits, history, city, etc. It's your decision. Because we're getting close end of the season, I'd recommend trying to narrow it down to several teams based on whatever your criterion is and then you can choose which team to support over the summer for the new season. You'll probably be drawn to at least 1 or 2 teams.
This is what you need to do. I started doing it in December and am down to Swansea and Spurs as I am attracted to their style of play the most.

I'd say Everton.
They have a 6'4 center midfielder who has an afro that makes him about 6'11. Their rival is Liverpool. It's one of the oldest teams in the EPL. They don't have a lot of money to make big transactions, but they make smart moves with the money they have. And last, you'll never be accused of being a bandwagon jumper.

Let the team pick you. Cantona was my original reason for following United. That summer night at the Camp Nou hooked me big time.

How bout you branch out further from the majority of this board and pick a team outside of the epl to follow

It's the easiest league to follow in the states. I watch Barca whenever they are on but La Liga is basically a 2 team league so that's no fun. I can't get into Serie A that much and the Bundesliga doesn't have that many games come on the channels I have. EPL it is.

I'd love to follow bundesliga more if I could.. But tv dictates I watch epl more than even MLS

I have really enjoyed the few Bundesliga games that I've caught on GolTV. There are just few and far between though.

i'd suggest newcastle... they should be one of the big clubs a la liverpool or arsenal and it'll be fun to see if they get there
also man city whom you could say has had a disappointing season. they might lose by the title by a few points, but it will feel like a few miles
aston villa is funny bc i rooted for them to break into the top-whatever, but now that they're nervously looking below at the relegation battle, i hope they get sucked in like a vacuum.
or you can hope qpr and/or wigan beat relegation
as for the championship possibilities
southampton okay
reading boring
west ham cool
birmingham
blackpool yes please bring back ollie
brighton awesome
middlesbrough no
cardiff them and swansea would be a treat

To the OP, reasons to pick Newcastle:
Best fan base
LINK
Bad arse stadium:
Awesome, prison style uniforms
What's not to love?

I agree. If you've settled on finding a team in the Swedish Allsvenskan, I suggest Åtvidabergs FF.

Bad idea. He won't really have anyone here to talk to his team about and it will be really hard to follow from the states.

Yeah, if I didn't grow up a Man United fan, I'd be all over Swansea.

You can support more than one!
I like Spurs for their style of play and also was drawn to Everton as my second team.
