Earlier material of both bands is definitely Prog.

10 min. plus songs, complex time signatures, wide array of instruments, prominent keyboard play, overeaching themes and story elements making up whole albums...all of this sort of seperates Prog Rock from normal classic rock.

Several bands known as classic rock bands started out with more prog rock roots. It was all part of the "selling out" that occurred in the early 80s. Yes is a prime example. I think Rush did a better job of staying closer to their roots and evolved, though even they gave in more than I preferred.
