Parcells Talk Draft Picks 2006-2009 By Grade

I'm a firm believer in not grading draft picks until after 3 years. For example, in 2010 there could still be a huge difference in how the careers of Tennant & Charles Brown might play out.
My grades are primarily how much they have done from what you might expect from that round of draft pick.
Incomplete (1)
Stanley Arnoux LB, not high expectations for a 4th Rder but two achilles rips meant we never even got to see anything
F (4)
Taylor Mehlhaff K, Drafting a kicker is notable, one that doesn't even make the team is a fail
Chip Vaughn DB & Antonio Pittman, both 4th rders did nothing and marginally made practice squads anywhere
Josh Lay DB 6th Rder who didn't even make a PS
D (4)
Usama Young CB, for a #66 he was never much more than a STer
Andy Alleman G, a 3rd rder who didn't make the roster but kicked around the NFL a little
Reggie, did a lot for the franchise and was a component in getting a Lombardi. Just not enough for a #2 overall
Sedrick Ellis, would have given him a B after 2010, dunno what happened last year
C (4)
Mike Hass WR 6th, Marvin Mitchell LB 7th, DeMario Pressley DT 5th, guys who skirted rosters and practice squads, reasonable expectations for 5th-7ths
Robert Meachem WR, for a #27 overall you can do worse and better. I think you'll see more of his true potential in a bigger role for SD- if he can stay healthy
B (5)
Roman Harper SS, even with his limitations he has been a vital cog for 6 years now
David Jones CB, 5th rder who didn't make it here but actually started some for the Bengals
Adrian Arrington, for a #237 to still be on the roster for 4 years is a win
Tracy Porter CB, For 4 years was a key component in team's rise, injuries is all that kept him back from being more or better
Malcolm Jenkins DB, changing positions is a bigger deal than many might think. He's on track and still has plenty of potential to do more
A (7)
Marques Colston WR, 7th Rd to alltime leader in most team receiving stats, big wow still 6 years later
Zach Strief OT, took developing but 7th Rd to NFL starter is a huge win
Rob Ninkovich LB, didn't fit here but for a 5th Rder he has been very good for the Pats
Jahri Evans G, 4th Rd to elite NFL player at any position is what builds dynasties
Jermon Bushrod OT, not as meteoric or awesome as Evans but still, any 4th Rder who can even be an average NFL LT is quite a pick
Carl Nicks G, see a theme here? get a dominate player in the 5th Rd= championship building block
Thomas Morstead P, yeah a 5th is a lot for a leg but he has proven to be a weapon.
Shop & compare, I think you would find most fans of other teams envious to have a .480 batting average in scoring A & B picks.
Whatchu say?

i mean theres no question our FO has been doing an excellent job at the draft since Paytons arrival.
I think he is an integral part of draft evaluation. I think part of Payton's appeal will be for him to be part of the draft. From what I've been hearing, he can still interact with staff and coaches, he just cannot coach.

Shouldn't you grade the Saints' picks based solely on their careers with the Saints?

that's a debatable point, my weighting is more about the initial evaluation. If he becomes productive elsewhere it shows that was good. Sometimes they don't make an initial impact for a variety of reasons.
Opposite would be David Thomas TE. He was an F for a 3rd Rder with NE. Since leaving there he's maybe C-ish overall.

Reggie and Sed should be C's imo

Usama is a C too. He played plenty for us and he started for the Browns last year.

for those two more cuz of the weight of being a #2 & a #7 (that they traded up to get).
Sedrick maybe a C, by year I would say B, D, A, F. Prolly weighted down cuz of being so invisible last year. Below par for my expectations for a #7 overall.
C for Reggie to me would be fulfilling your average expectation for a #2 overall. IMO he has never reached that. For a #24 he would be a A.

You're grading D.Pressley higher than Ellis?

As said to start, my grade is performance in ratio to expectations for the draft spot. Ellis #7 overall should be an impacting close to Pro Bowl for a C. Pressley 5th Rd #144 still being around at all in the NFL 5 years later might be a C+
---------------------
Usama- he did start 8 games last year for a dreadful team. Started 6 in 4 years for NOLA. I don't think any here were ever from outplaying anybody but injuries to others. For a #66 overall I go a little higher than that for a C average.

P.Thomas? Wasn't even drafted, which is even more remarkable how he has turned out.
