If he stays healthy and playing at his current level, hey very well could be.

Federer hasn't declined. His competition just got better.

That's complete and total bullshite. The guy is 30 years old and clearly isn't what he used to be. He's lost a few steps, his forehand has lost a good bit of its bite, and he's more prone to wild consistency swings in matches. Wilander's opinion is irrelevant

Please stop bumping old threads. If you want to talk about tennis, start a thread on your own. Thanks.

And yours is quite relevant?

To be fair, Federer has obviously declined.

Like him or not Novak could be the next Pete.

Then why is it that he beats everybody in the world except two guys? One guy who has always beat him. And then another guy who is just on a different planet right now.

Take away Djoker and Nadal: would Federer not be winning three majors a year again?

It doesn't look like a decline to me. It looks like the status quo + emergence of Novak Djokovic.

Federer has lost to Roddick twice in the last month.

Fed plays with such ease that it seems like he is his old self. But he has declined JUST because of his age.

Yes, I wanted to talk tennis. Why is it better to start a new thread than bump a week old thread?

Exhibitions don't count.

You think he let him win? And that surface in New York heavily favored Federer.

Federer used to murder Andy back when Andy was in his prime. Andy has obviously declined, and we're supposed to believe that a prime Federer can lose to Roddick twice in a month?

Nah.

I have heard multiple pros say the same thing about exhibitions: they're not trying to lose, but they're also not terribly concerned if they do. Federer has said he uses them as an opportunity to try out new wrinkles to his game.

Exception: Johnny Mac is concerned with whether he wins exhibitions. I'm speculating.

Federer won the previous three tournaments he played in before he lost to Roddick in Miami. And the one right before the Miami tournament was in Indian Wells, which is a Masters 1000 tournament (very important tournaments...one step down from majors). In that run he beat Nadal, Murray, and Delpo three times (among other notable wins).

I'm giving the preceding results a lot more weight than the loss to Roddick. The loss to Roddick was a fluke.

The idea that Federer couldn't have declined because he's still good enough to win masters tourneys or make the semis of slams is beyond stupid.

That's the second time you've tossed out the same unsupported conclusion. How about you tell us why it's beyond stupid. This way you can add something to the discussion.

How about the ATP tour world finals? That's a pretty insignificant event, right?

Oh wait.

I don't think he'll win another major.

I'm definitely not on Federer's jock. Hell, Rafa is my favorite player. My point is that Federer's slam drought has more to do with the emergence of Novak Djokovic than the decline of Roger Federer. It's a completely reasonable position. Especially when Federer has been absolutely dominating sub-elite players like Delpo.
