I agree that would be a tough situation. It's a shame that it's so easily avoidable.
All of you outdoorsman really need to look into the Spot Tracker system. $100 a year for safety and piece of mind is well worth it. I use one when kayaking and pay the $50 extra for the live tracking feature.
You can push a button and it send your gps coordinates to friends. You can tell them you are OK or that you need help or you can push a button that provides your exact location to the international geo-rescue station.
It's water proof and operates off AAA batteries. Smaller than a cell phone. No reason not to have one if you outdoors in remote locations. It is satellite based so cell coverage is never an issue.
