Got to thinking about the obvious success of Game of Thrones based on a great book series and wondered if a Lord of the Rings series could work. My only thoughts are that it might be difficult to attract interest to a series with a different set of actors after the epic that was the LotR movie trilogy. Thoughts? And yes, I am aware that there was an animated LotR TV series but I'm suggesting a non-animated series.

Probably would have worked better before the movie.

I would love to see deeper on screen development, so I would watch. It would work best as a predetermined 3 season show rather than open-ended. They could go 4 seasons with the Hobbit.

Agree with both of your points. Wonder if they might consider it after the Hobbit is produced? Unlike the movie series, they could start the TV series with The Hobbit or even further back with The Silmarillion.

I was just thinking last night if a GoT movie would work.

I would love to see some of the battles with a larger budget.

The Silmarillion

I've always thought an HBO-produced Silmarillion miniseries would be pretty awesome. Along the lines of The Pacific/BoB. Could do 1-3 episodes per tale from the book.

Personally I have a feeling this would be horrible and much prefer that they're making two feature length films in the style of the LotR trilogy.

The analogy that comes to mind to me of turning The Hobbit into a tv series is Legend of the Seeker. I was a huge fan of the books and thought for years that some great films could be made from them. I was skeptical but excited when the tv show was announced...and then it was terrible, nothing like the books. Same would happen to the Hobbit imo

If would have to be done in the BALLER HBO-style like GoT. Not some fox BS. I don't know if the movies can be outdone because the movies are AMAZING.

I would actually want to see something NOT in the books. Of course with someone very dearly in love with the material producing.

But yes it could work.

HBO is the only one who could do it, ala rome.

I don't think it could

Series have small budgets.

You needed that huge Hollywood money to do some scenes justice.

If HBO can pull of GoT, they could pull off LotR. You just wouldn't see any epic battles like in the movie.

Valid point. Might have to work around the epic battle scenes like the did in Rome. It will be interesting to see how HBO handles an analogous situation in Game of Thrones after they get into the Clash of Kings book.

I think I could enjoy this as long as the context stayed close to that defined in the books. Going back into early Elf, Dwarf and Man history could be interesting as well as the aftermath of Return of the Kings.

The difference is that GoT is dialogue/interaction driven.

LOTR is event based.

I'll tell you what really could work: a Harry Potter animated series. If they treated it completely seriously, they could do 7 very good seasons of a show.

I tend to agree with this perspective which might be why Freauxzen's suggestion about a script outside the books but within the context of LotR's might actually work better. One thing for sure it would be impossible to depict the epic battle scenes of LotR's without a big budget. This remains a limiting factor spelling the doom of the Rome series which had great potential and died much too young due to budget constraints.

Gollum would be underwhelming after what the movies showed.
