I swear when this all started, I thought someone would take a flyer on him for 1 year/10-12 million and go from there. Never saw this coming a few weeks ago.

That is why Peyton's deal is structured like this:
Manning will make $18 million in 2012 with no injury protection.
If he passes a March 2013 physical, guarantees of $20 million will activate for 2013 and 2014, with an undisclosed injury waiver.
I'm sure we'll have details on the "undisclosed injury waiver" soon.
