It really isn't a necessity for day hikes. I could definitely see the use if you were hiking the AT or even a couple day hike, but he can drink the water from the creek and really doesn't even need food for a 5 hour hike. He can have half of my sandwich.

Just finished reading this entire thread. Nice work, fellows.

My 10-year old son and I will be doing a 3 day hike in Sequoia National Park at some point.

We hike out one morning, set up camp somewhere, and the return 2 days later. Nothing difficult...I will have plenty of questions.

I'm ready to take a couple days off of work and take my son on a weekend hiking trip. Know of anything close to BR we can go to?
