He's a great player, but shouldn't this go to Cannon? I mean, he's the only one to get the big trophy. I don't think he's the best football player in LSU history, but he is one of the greats IMO.

The problem with that theory is that the Heisman Trophy is a popularity contest and it doesn't always go to the best player. It's usually given to the player with the gaudiest stats, who plays for a winning team and has a "Heisman moment". There are some Heisman Trophy winners that never even got drafted or played in the NFL. The NFL and College Football HOF's are full of player who never received a single Heisman vote. A great player who played on a lousy team, a team that didn't have a system that allowed a player to put up crazy stats or a deep team that just had so many weapons that they spread the ball around doesn't preclude that player from being great. A great offensive system can "produce" Heisman candidates. Not even a great defense can do that.
Cannon won the Heisman because he played offense, defense, punted and returned punts and kickoffs. Alot of people also felt that he deserved the Heisman the year before. Cannon's Heisman season stats were hardly spectacular - 604 yards rushing, 11 receptions and 6 total TDs. IMO TM's defensive and special teams stats are far more impressive...but it will be tough for a defensive player to win the Heisman unless he plays some offense and special teams AND still has great defensive stats. But not winning the Heisman should never be used in an argument measuring a players greatness. It's a bullshite award.
