John Hollinger's Hornets deadline deal that should happen. Thoughts?

Ray Allen and Trevor Ariza to the Clippers; Chris Kaman and Eric Bledsoe to Boston; Chris Wilcox, Randy Foye, Ryan Gomes, Chauncey Billups, and Brian Cook to New Orleans
While we're breaking up the Celtics, here's another good one to ponder -- either in conjunction with the deal above or on its own. The Clippers certainly become rather potent in the wake of this trade; by agreeing to swallow Ariza's contract from the Hornets and part with the promising Bledsoe, they get a deadly wing shooter in Allen to replace the injured Billups. Additionally, Ariza gives them the wing defender they've sorely needed all season.
For New Orleans, this is a straight salary dump of Ariza, with Kaman the lure. The Hornets would have to pay Gomes one more year, but otherwise get four expiring contracts. New Orleans also would have to waive Solomon Jones and Lance Thomas to make this deal work; let's just say I don't see that as a show-stopper.
As for the Celtics, they get a promising guard in Bledsoe and the Bird rights to a big low-post center, Kaman. That actually has value for the C's, who unlike New Orleans actually have a prayer of re-signing Kaman. They do take on $2.6 million in luxury tax in this deal, but if they don't do the one above, they can eliminate that expense by sending O'Neal to the Hornets instead of Wilcox.
Since we'd almost certainly have to buyout Billups immediately too can't say that I love it.

No thank you. I'm not willing to give up our best trade asset and a good young SF with elite defense for
trash.

The tank would be assured with that trade.

I don't want to salary dump Ariza. Are people watching him play this year?

The Hornets do not need to dump Ariza. This trade is pure garbage.

Seriously. He's having his best season of his entire career and we want to all of a sudden dump his salary? Maybe last year but I kinda want to keep him now. Hopefully his offense improves a little more and he can be worth his contract. You don't find many guys that play great perimeter defense like he does.

Exactly. And next season he'll be playing alongside an elite scorer. We don't need everyone to be an elite scorer. Ariza is a perfect guy to have against the likes of Durant, Kobe, etc... just do your best to make sure he's your 3rd or 4th option (if we managed to keep Kaman + get Gordon back, problem solved, get Davis or TRob andd he'd be a 3b kind of guy).

The thing is for a veteran starting SF entering his prime his contract isn't that crazy. For instance he makes less money than Tyrus Thomas, less money than Marvin Williams, and 800K more than Francisco Garcia. Ariza's contract is not great but it's not like he's got Peja's contract.

Yeah that's true. As long as we can afford it I love having that tough defender on our team. He and Gordon will be able to guard pretty much anyone from the 1-3 position.

Ariza has been a journey man his whole career. I really believe that if a team gives him a real chance (3 years or so) that he could become a pretty good player for that team. He seems to be getting more and more comfortable in the offense and he's always been a solid defender. I hope we hold on to him unless he needs to be involved in a big deal. But I do not want us to just dump him.

And that's exactly what we're going to do, IMO. I have a feeling that Ariza is Monty's favorite player on the team. The guy stresses defense and you don't get that much better than Ariza at the 3.

If we make a trade with those teams Rondo better be involved.

Hollinger has proven time and time and time and time again to be one of the least knowledgeable media guys about such things. He knows jack shite.
And that trade is abysmal. frick that.

He's always been good, imo. Played well in L.A. but had a very mediocre stint in Houston because they wanted him to be something he's not.
The guy is athletic, long and plays great defense. He'll give you some points. He doesn't have to be, nor should he be, your second or thirs scoring option.

Ariza isn't really overpaid for the value he's bringing.

Just so I'm sure I got it straight. What everybody on here is saying is that Jack, Ariza and Okafor are solid starters and shouldn't be traded. Gordon is a future superstar and shouldn't be traded. Vasquez, Henry and Ayon are the core of a great bench. So the only hole that the Hornets have is PF and maybe back-up center? After they fill that one hold, this time is a playoff team and possible championship contender, right?
Posted on 3/9/12 at 10:40 pm to brmark70816
Oak is not solid, not even close.

Where the hell did you get that from? Especially the Okafor part since the only player who gets shite on more than him is Belli.
