She was still in the car when he had the accident. That was the point where he pointed out that only HIS seat was deathproof. That's why he drove so violently to kill the her. So it would look like she died in the car crash.

If he was drunk it'd still be something akin to vehicular manslaughter. Since he was stone sober with alibis that he didn't drink, and with the other car full of drunk stoned people, the assumption would fall on them causing the crash which further diverts attention from him.

Also, getting shot hurts. He wanted to numb the pain and clean the wound. It also shows that he is a drinker but carefully plans out his murders/wrecks.
