He's not doing the "distant loner thing." He's doing the "I'm a fricking sociopath who has no idea how to interact with a normal person" thing. The pauses are supposed to be very awkward. The Driver has to think so hard about what a "normal" person would say or do in "normal" situations, that it takes him a while to formulate his thoughts. It's awkward, and you can see his wheels turning for too long before he acts.

When he almost freaks out on the guy in the coffee shop, that's really him.
