Beretta Px4-40
Colt 1911 Government (you will LOVE the 1911)
Pick a Glock in 40 or 45
Ruger SR9
Sig 229 in 40 (I'm not a sig guy, but I hear good things)
Springfield xdm in 40 or 45 (My favorite "plastic" gun. I choose the xd over Glock all day, but it's personal preference)
S&W m&p 40 or 45

S&W 686 (For what you are needing I would give a lot of thought to a revolver. I lOVE a wheel gun)

I would change that to 9mm or 45. If choosing between 9 and 40 I go with 9 all day. Less recoil, more capacity, cheaper. 45 is has a balistic superiority that if you can handle it, it is worth it.

My first duty gun. If you hate the Glock/XD trigger pull give this a whirl. A barrell change in a 229 and you have .357 auto. Great round, but expensive.
