The field starts with 156 pros and 156 amateurs, paired with each other. After the first three rounds, all pros and the top 25 amateurs make the cut.

If a professional's assigned amateur makes the cut, then they continue on in a team format (in addition to the pro playing individual stroke play to win the "real" tourney, of course).

Amateurs don't play individual stroke play, instead using the combined stroke score of him and his professional partner to determine the winner.

so the top 25 ams that make the cut are determined by their combined 4-ball score with their partner?

What if the am qualifies as top 25 but his pro partner misses the real cut?

Not the combined score, the best score on each hole (with the amateur using his handicap) used to derive a team score.
