Scottsdale is an option he says, so sounds like a plan to me.

To the OP, not sure what kinda price ranges and types of food you are looking to sample, but I'll just throw out a few I like.

El Bravo is a good hole in the wall Mexican joint towards the north/middle of Phoenix. If you go there I highly recommend trying their Indian frybread dishes (their shredded beef with green sauce frybread dish is superb). They also make top notch green corn tamales. Their Sopapillas for desert are great too. They are a good choice for lunch in particular.

Carlsbad Tavern is a solid New Mexican style place I've gone to in Scottsdale.

One of my favorite Phoenix places is Cornish Pasty Company for good food and beer/drinks. There are two locations, one in Chandler where I usually go and one in Tempe. The pasties are excellent.

This last one is kinda a unique one I just discovered that has awesome food. It's another hole in the wall in Tempe that is Scandinavian style with Swedish/Polish/Canadian food and is delicious. Food can take a little while since it's all from scratch, but it's great food.

Beaver's Choice

I'm sure Nurse, 480, and any other locals could add a bunch more choices if they see this.
