Does anyone know the approximate starting pay and top pay for offshore operators working for major a oil company in the Gulf...mainly Shell? What career advancement opportunities could I expect and how long do people typically work offshore before moving to something onshore?

Do you have any operator experience? If not you're looking at working for a contract company first and start off around 45k. There are many different advancement opportunities out there but not many involve onshore work unless you are willing to take a big pay cut.

My father worked for Baker for 25 years. He started off making around 35k in the late 80's and retired making $2000 a month in base pay and $45/hr when he was on a rig.He just had a geology degree and dealt with drilling fluids but got extra training to become an operator when the industry tanked in the 80's.
