Tigris,
This snowy owl that you saw today....what is he perched on?? Thanks for posting the underwings of the rough-legged hawk. That always helps!
I hear ya. When I see gulls flying, I almost just want to turn my head, pretend I didn't see them. They're around the crawfish ponds, esp when the bay is real rough. When I take photos, almost always need help from others to get positive ID. It's a pain.

I facking hate ID'ing sandpipers and similar shore birds. Gulls too. Argh

Where is this coming from?

That is a tall power pole, probably 40 feet above the ground (used a 400 mm lens for the shot and blew it up). It surprised me that he was that high, I haven't seen a lot of Snowy Owls but usually owls are a lot lower to the ground.
As said I'm not sure this thread will get much traffic, I have the impression that there may be a general interest in birds along with other wildlife but few if any serious birders. The logistics are problematic too with people scattered all over (I live in Georgia). For information two good sites that I'd recommend are
the Birding List Digest where you can see reports from all over the country:
LINK
And eBird where people enter their trip data and you can see both recent sightings and historical patterns of where to try for various species.
LINK
Both are indispensable to me when I'm traveling and want to try for some birds I usually can't see .
Birding suits me nicely as a hobby, a good excuse to get outdoors in some great places and try some photography as well.
