I rarely visit this board, but dropped by tonight to see if there was a thread about a show I'm interested in, and saw the anime thread.
I'll admit I haven't watched a lot of anime - some of the usual suspects: death note, Akira, etc., and I've enjoyed them well enough, but a few years ago I watched a series called Ergo Proxy that i found captivating.
It begins like so many anime (or tv shows and movies do these days) as a post-apocalyptic tale about a severely damaged planet ( seems to be Earth), and the way humans exist and interact with each other, based on class systems, and with robots.
The themes are big, Gnosticism plays a huge role, but viewers who could care less about any literary or philosophical allusions might enjoy the carnage (some really unique and cleverly realized monsters), the mystery (a great detective story) and the truly gorgeous animation.
I'm not sure where it can be viewed, but it's definitely worth checking out if you can find it.

Ergo Proxy
I thought the story was alright. I did really like the characters. Pino and Re-l are really well done.
