I don't have hard and fast numbers, but it's pretty clear that at least vs some SEC schools (Bama, Auburn, Florida, Tennessee) we don't have as big of a OOS program. Ditto for FSU and Oklahoma, and in future years, Ohio State.

I think it's pretty clear that no one school can throw a "fence" around a particular area. Not USC, not Bama, and not Michigan. Those days are over with modern technology like Twitter, Skype, Facebook and cellphones. Plus school airplanes. Being "far away" just doesn't exist anymore (well, except if your first name is Gunner)

These resources can make any kid anywhere accessible to any school. So that being said, why isn't LSU going after a higher number of 5 stars, both regionally and nationwide. And this goes back to Saban, if not before so don't blame it all on Miles. LSU simply has never had a lot of OOS players.

We have some, but not to the level of other schools. I think this year is a wakeup call with both LC and DD going OOS themselves, and last year a few went as well. My take is we should be on top of LA recruits because many of them have always dreamed of playing for LSU.

Those days are ending. Programs are becoming brands, both pro and on the college level. Kids from LA wear Oregon gear, mainly because they can buy it as easily as LSU gear. When a kid runs around in Bama (or the U) gear other kids see him, and things take root.

LA is a recruiting hotbed and we're desperately trying to keep out the intruders. Even if we wanted to, we can't take all LA players. We need OOS player who can fit in a specific class and in a specific position. I think we spend so much time defending our turf that maybe we are not paying as much attention to OOS players who may want to come here.

Frank Wilson recruits the region as well as anyone, but he can't beat everyone back if it's a big talent year. If we don't already, we need a outside of region master recruiter. Despite Jan 9, we ARE a BRANDED NATIONAL PROGRAM right now and everyone in the USA knows LSU. So let's get on with it!

i actually think that OOS recruiting has gotten harder with the advancement in technology.

More teams are on TV now, and its easier to get noticed while staying closer to home.

Gone are the days when Nebraska had 70 OOS kids on their roster.

we can talk about not recruiting out of state, but if you look at the probable starting lineup for next year it is littered with oos talent

Shepperd - TX
Hurst - TN
Wiliford (if he starts at OG) - AL
Ware - OH
Mett - GA
Montgomery - SC
Minter - GA
Loston - TX

Could be more/less depending on how camp works out the depth chart, but if you look at key players not starting, you will have Ferguson(Md), Copecland(Ga), Hairston(Tx), both the 2nd and 3rd QB will be OOS plus any OOS freshmen we get this year. Based on what our roster looks like, I think we are on par with other big programs. The thing about the others is LSU gets the lion's share of LA talent. Bama splits with Auburn, Florida shares with Miami and FSU, Ohio State and Tennessee are forced to move OOS becasue the talent isn't as plentiful in those states as it is in the other SEC states.

My opinion (for what its worth) is that we are in fine shape locking down the state the best we can and targeting good OOS talent that is willing to commit and come to BR. Location is a massive recruiting tool and many 18 year old players don't want to travel too far away. LSU is lucky to be sitting in fertile football territory.

Bottom line is there is a higher percentage of kids who play their college ball regionally. Not necessarily in their home town but within a days driving distance. One of the reasons is parents have the ability to periodically watch a game in person and the kids have the ability to drive home for holidays.
Thus your sweet spot is within a 8 hour drive not cross country.

Before last years class were 51-49 oos under miles. I think it had more to do with the hurricane and louisiana being down. Im all for the in state guys and going oos for positions of need if a quality player isnt in LA for that position.

Basically ur just wrong 05-10 51% of players that signed an LOI did not play their sr year of highschool in LA. Last year LA was just stacked.

Now i didnt count walk ons or guys that leave the program early. Strictly by rivals list of guys that signed.

I think you still have to realize one thing. We are still talking about kids who want to be close "enough" to home that they can have family and/or friends within a short distance. I think someone already said 8 hr drive is the honeypot and i agree.

LSU recruits the golden triangle of high school talent. Thats been working pretty well so far and I say we stick to it.

Every once in a while we go to Florida or Ohio/Michigan, but Houston, Louisiana and South Mississippi is our bread and butter and what we need to concentrate on.

If you can say anything about OOS recruiting, I'd say that we need to open the door to Mobile again. We used to get a few kids from there, but it's bama territory again.
