His backlash wouldn't have been as bad had he timed it differently and acted right in doing it IMO. I'm with you though, if he really wants to leave it's completely cool with me.

I'm be willing to bet that there is very, very, very little extreme backlash.
He may get tigerbaited from time to time (I doubt very often). People at his school probably are throwing it at him continuously. But, I wouldn't call any of that extreme.
