Understood. When I putchased it the 6970 was the top of the new Radeon food chain. The 6990 wasn't out and I'm not about to drop that type of coin on a graphics card anyway.
My point was that to get high performance you don't have to buy the top of the line in graphics cards. As someone said earlier a 6850 (I think that was the model) will do a pretty darned good job.

The OP is waiting for Ivy Bridge. Ivy Bridge is slated to release Q2 2012. There is absolutely no reason to suggest any 6 series or any equivalent Nvidia GPU as the 7 series is starting to be released this month and Kepler being release Q1-Q2 of this year.
If you want to reccommend a 6 series, the 6970 should drop to around $300 and the 6990 to around $500 (wishful thinking). It's hard to make a build for Ivy Bridge when the 7 series Mobo's aren't even out yet and the current GPU generation is being phased out.
