Here is how that can happen.

During the timeout the official administering the throw in has the ball and stands in a spot near where the ball will be thrown in, the other two officials either stand on the block (full) opposite each bench or at the top of the key (30 sec). Once the first horn sounds they go each bench and tell the teams to get ready for play. As the teams return to the floor each official is supposed to count the team from the bench he is nearest. Then the second horn sounds, the official administering the throw in checks his partners and if they signal ready for play then he bounces the ball to the thrower and play resumes with a throw in.

The official responsible for ULL's bench turns his back to the floor and walks to the baseline (the lead position) and never counts the ULL players. There are five ULL players on the court and one standing out of bounds to throw the ball in. The official responsible for WKU goes to his spot (the C position opposite the ULL bench) and points to the third official (the trail position) that he is ready for play. The trail tosses the ball to the ULL player who throws it in

Now you ask how can they not notice the 6 guys on the floor during play? Well the trail official is responsible for the area out high towards the division line, the C official is responsible for across the lane and the ball if it comes to his side and the lead position is responsible for the lane. They are all three looking in their areas and obviously none of them are looking at the entire floor.

Since the ball stayed out high for most of the 16 seconds, each official was looking at his area and nobody noticed the extra guy because for the most part each official was looking at 4 offensive players in their area.

what is inexcusable is:
the lead not counting ULL players out of the timeout

the trail not scanning the entire floor before putting the ball in play

NOBODY on the crew hearing the people yelling out there are six players on the court

two weeks ago I was the trail official (near the scorer's table) on a FT attempt in a girl's HS game. I am responsible for bringing in subs after the first of two FTs. I bring the subs in, turn and look at the floor and count 5 offense and 5 defense. little did i know one of the girls walked to the bench behind me but never left the floor and was standing directly behind me. So the second FT is missed, we run back down and we have 6 players on offense. We immediately recognize it and I call the Technical. Sometimes shite happens

Thanks for the breakdown. If you've been a highschool referee for any period of time in Louisiana then you know my grandfather
