Because they've got nothing else.
Was fixin' to post this.

Most countries have a national identity - gained through shared experiences of its people and passed down in oral and written histories. This defines what they're proudest of and what makes them great. Greece as the birthplace of democracy. Russia as heavy-handed xenophobic slavs who think they rule the world.

The United States is a bit different in that we're very young as countries go and our "national" identity comes from the state we call home. Californians treasure their coastline and mountains and redwood forests. Iowans are batsh*t over corn. We (Louisianians) have a fairly rich history with the Acadian French and Spanish influence. What does Alabama have?

Answer: a history of being very good at football. There's not much else to define their identity.

It's all they got.

Your post started out so well phrased and went down hill from there. Hank Williams Sr and W.C. Handy disagree with your thoughts on Alabama. As does Hank Aaron,Jesse Owens and Joe Louis. Helen Keller and Harper Lee dont see it your way either (of course Hellen Keller didint see it at all). Marcedes Benz and NASA are fond of the state as well. As for your states "rich history with Acadian French and Spanish influence" Jr., Willie and the rest of the cast of "Swamp People" agree.

Of course you probably realize that Mardi Gras originated in Mobile, AL.
