Also, don't feel like you have to shoot everything. I wasted a lot of ammo early in life until I realized I could holster my weapon and just kick those radroaches/non-fire-breathing ants/other smaller enemies. Or go at them in VATS with a baseball bat. Same effect - dead critter, no ammo waste, little harm to yourself.

There is definitely an early ammo crisis. However, you do eventually get over this unseen "hump" and should be fine after that. There's also a perk you can take that will make more ammo pop up... think it's called Scrounger. Also, seemed to me like there was more ammo available for small guns (basically, all non-energy weapons), so definitely use perks in that category as well.

As far as enemies, yup, you will run across some that will own you for a while. Just the way it is until you get stronger. If you see a giant dinosaur-looking creature on the horizon, do yourself a favor and run like hell away from it. Don't really want to play with Deathclaws for a while. However, tip for them - make yourself a dart gun and cripple the legs.

Now, if anyone has a better tip than "spray and pray" between cover for Super Mutant Overlords, I'll gladly take it. Those guys are a mofo to bring down, don't care what level you are.
