Where did Beast Mode originate from in sports?

I remember saying it in everyday life before I heard it related to sports.

I think it was popularized by the Transformers line of Beast Wars toys and the cartoon. I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly, but I think they actually said "Beast Mode" when they transformed.

Lil Wayne.. but really I grew up with the phrase "beast mode", I think it's a reference to video games

Maybe Doom or some early pc game
