Thinking about updating my desktop and I'm not sure my options. I have 1GB stick of ram with an extra slot right next to it. What is the maximum ram my cpu can hold? Also, what is a good video card? I plan on playing Skyrim(hopefully on Ultra).

Whoa, you've been running with 1GB of RAM for how long?? And the amount of RAM your computer can deal with depends on the OS, so what do you have.

You should just buy a console or start from scratch

You can

Make sure its the same type as your current ramstick if you wanna run em both

Or

Buy multiple sticks and make sure its compatible with your mobo

Not really.

All your drivers probably work so you never ran into an issue. You just think it sucks because everyone else says so.

Sure. And it won't do a thing to get you where you've stated you want to be.

Give complete specs on the computer you have. Then I can tell you if you can upgrade it to do what you stated (which I doubt) or if you need to start from scratch (which I suspect)

Maybe, but you don't really need more than 4GB RAM for gaming. Most have more than that simply because RAM is cheap, and it looks good on the technical description. Regardless, a computer that had 1 GB RAM to begin with, is not going to be able to run Skyrim anywhere close to ultra, even if the RAM is upgraded. It probably has a crappy video card and may have a slow processor as well.

Actually, I think it sucks because it doesn't come close to the Linux that's on my laptop and Windows 7 on my work cpu.

3.2 GHz processor, factory video card (terrible). But I'm willing to get a new vid. card, just need some advice on what to get.

What exact processor? What motherboard and what power supply?

I hate to break it to you but you're going to need a new motherboard. I'd bet my left nut that you don't have a PCI-E slot for graphics and you're going to need that. That means a new motherboard and processor. In addition your power supply isn't going to be able to power that graphics card so you'll need a new power supply. Add a case, SATA hard drive (or SSD drive) and RAM and now you can run Skyrim at ultra settings.

Sorry. I'm not trying to be a prick but I've been building computers for a long time and it really isn't possible to take an older computer and bring it to the highest modern standards. And a 2 year old computer is old.
