The park is fine now, but 20-25 years ago was during the height of the crack era (plus NYC's murder rate then was quadruple today's numbers), so it wasn't exactly the best place for Kevin (a 10 year old kid from out-of-town) to wander around at night.

In HA2, the newspaper with the headlines "Wet Bandits Escape" blows against the front door. So obviously the escape was big news and considering it was in the newspaper, it had occurred some time that day or the day before.
If that's the case why didn't the authorities notify the McCallisters that their son, who was solely responsible for their incarceration, should be on the lookout? At the very least, some police protection should've been assigned to Kevin.
