My biggest problem is not with a team that fails to win their conference winning the NC. My concern is more with the rematch scenario. Say LSU wins out and gets matched with Oregon in the BCSCG. It will just seem wrong if Oregon wins and is declared national champion. We will be 14-1, they will be 14-1, and our only losses will have come to one another. That sure feels like a tie. Alabama would be the same thing. Heck if Bama were to beat LSU, they would only be 13-1, so really..LSU would have a better winning percentage. Maybe they could lose the game and still be Champs. I can certainly understand why teams would shy away from tough schedules if playing them provides so little benefit.
