I've always wondered what people saw in rice field leases south of I-10. I don't think I've ever had a successful south LA hunt unless it was in the marsh. Kaplan, Gueydan, etc. are good for a few teal and some specklebellies, but it seems like mallards are few and far between in the rice fields down there. Now fields in East Central and NE LA are totally different and I've pounded the mallards in the Mer Rouge area before, and had a lease in that area for a long time. A buddy of mine's family owns a great marsh club and I have seen why the marsh is so good and so coveted, but again have never had success other than a few teal and spoonies or some geese in Kaplan, Gueydan, Welsh, etc.

There are plenty of good rice field blinds in south LA, they are just way more expensive because on the convenience of not having to go in the marsh. I have a friend that leases a rice field blind in Gueydan and they killed 14 pintail, 11 mallards, grey ducks, and 6 geese on opening morning. That blind runs 12k a year though.

I have a lease in Welsh. 1 mile north of the interstate and I've hunted rice fields in Jennings, Klondike, lake Arthur, Guedan and Kaplan. Never a problem killing quality birds. But I will say that you need a ton of water to have a good season. If you find a good farmer willing to go above and beyond to keep the water in there then it's on. Found our lease on La Sptsmn
