Conference/division championships are irrelevant. That's not a prerequisite for winning the NCAA basketball tournament. Why should it be for football? LSU's baseball team dudn't win the conference every time they won the College World Series.

Perhaps you missed the part where Baseball and Basketball had a playoff system.
